martin thönen, was born on June 5th, 1942 in thoune. he lives and works as wood engraver in his studio in bern and huémoz, switzerland.

he made his training course as typographer and graphic designer in switzerland (moutier, montreux and geneva). He spend several times for abroad  for study (morocco, egypt, peru, usa, indonesia, asia and india)

martin thönen, man of snowdrifts,  built in his skeleton like a red ball of fir tree planted in snow.

he is pegged with the two hands, at the curve of his wrists, for better articulating the mechanism of his hands of engraver.

he delivers to us a square of mountain, cut out, trimmed, like an open window for us, in the discretion of his studio, modesty, simplicity and prayer.

the route of its life as creator, engraved, dug, encrusted, incised in a bed of paper, like the stream which digs the cliff, by seeking an exit in its bed of stones.  all the premeditated mobility of the wild stream, the pits, the foam of water obey the relief, which directly face the stiff slope of the sheet of paper; the slope of the mountain which accelerates the movement of the stream which precipitates the gesture of the engraver, in a final, impulsive and fragile movement of no return.

a light fuzziness upsets the picture, the engraver adapts it when it digs the line with the sharp-edged blade of his knife which incises the wood board. the stream flees on the slope of the rock like a paper roll, unrolled between the trees.

the wind, the noise of the waves, rolling, the strange call of the water in its vision of mass, which brings us back straight at the origins of his own place of birth.

the glance moves and travels: here, another band of water tamed by him,

at the precise place where the large trees of the forest penetrate the surface of the lake where the pond, by sharp-edged summits of the top of their trunk; to turn upside down the picture, inverted, the picture reproduced by water, to mean its reflection.

his visions of the earth, his visions of the air, his visions of water.

he kept the fire it in order to have a better melting of lead, antimony and pewter alloy, when he imagines his characters in print, by finding the ritual of its old trade: printer. the size of the knife will not change. word- cutter, book-cutter, picture-cutter to the dimension of the world, like the stone-cutter.
