statement about work the junction between the land, the sea and the sky has always been important to me. it is within this setting that i place my images which come together to symbolise people, places or emotions. influences on my work range from the early italian painters of siena like duccio and sassetta through to present day. i'm fascinated by the improbable changes of scale and perspective and the almost surreal placing of objects and images in early italian painting and the symbolism in the attributes of the saints, which conceptually decode the pictures for the onlooker but also act as subtle punctuations around the paintings. the surrealism in my work is born out of this period of painting. I borrow imagery from painters such as böcklin (quoting from the rock on the left hand side of the island of the dead painting, leipzig version, which for me became a symbol of stability). I owe a debt to de chirico, especially his seated mannequin city figure groups which have undoubtedly influenced my exile drawings and of course to grünwald for the extraordinary experience when visiting his isenheim alter piece in colmar, which spawned three years of painting for me and still continues in part into my current work, right through to contemporary german painters like andreas schulze with his large strange interiors (art from europe at the tate, mid eighties), the theatricality and complexity of immendorf and the multi layering of david salle, ail merge and mingle in my attempts to make paintings. although i paint my paintings in london the settings are for me always along the coast of porthcawl where I grew up and in my mind still play out incidents of life on its beaches. through drawing and writing poetry I attempt to assemble some kind of statement out of the historical and contemporary legacy and gifts I encounter both in the real world and the art world and that place between, if I can I hope to hold some of those moments for others to see and contemplate and wonder and wander then move on. robin mason |
