rolf lukaschewski was born in 1947 in schleswig, germany. in 1957, as a child, he moved with his parents to köln (germany), where he attended from 1968-1878 the high school of art and design and undertook studies of painting and sculpture. he passed his exams in painting with professor dieter kraemer. since 1993 he has been living in montreux, Switzerland. rolf lukaschewski is a very appreciated painter, in germany and abroad. his pictures reflect a real artistic and spiritual affinity with max beckmann, otto dix and george grosz. the influence of these great masters of painting is especially felt in the works he painted in the eighties. at the moment when jean-pierre lavignes (galerie lavignes paris) discovered lukaschewski, still a student, he organized him a first solo exhibition in paris (île saint-louis). the acquisition by the national museum of modern art of paris of three large size works of lukaschewski dates back this time. the many exhibitions which took place during the following years enabled rolf lukaschewski to continue to upgrade on the national and international market of contemporary art.
rolf
lukaschewski is an artist of today. the subjects he approaches and the questions
he asks take birth in reality. his compositions, a sort of collage, find their
roots in history and illustrate the contemporary time. lukaschewski wants to
confront us with history and show the results of a long analysis.
rolf
lukaschewski is well known for his deeply psychological portraits. the aim of
the portrait is not to carry out a faithful reproduction of the model, but on
the contrary to update hidden states of mind. he wants to paint people as they
really are, and not as they would like to be seen. He has found a form of personal expression. his brushwork of an obvious aggressiveness puts the object bared, revealing it in all its major vulnerability. "when I am in germany, I have in front of me a sad people and I wonder why this people has become what it is." rolf lukaschewski 1989 "what violently distinguishes him from expressionism: the body movement of lukaschewski does not translate the painter’s state of mind, on the contrary, his jerky brushwork celebrates his characters’ feelings, who bare their teeth. a vital sensuality emerges, evoking spheres in ordinary bad taste where a new myth appears." the "berliner tagesspiegel 1988" extract from r. lukaschewski’s press book |
